Holiday Tree Lighting at City Park – December 5, 2025

The season officially begins with Morro Bay’s Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration on Friday, December 5. Head to City Park starting at 3:30 PM for an afternoon of music, kids’ crafts, treats, and family-friendly cheer. The large Christmas tree lights up at dusk around 5 PM, bringing the heart of town alive with color and joy. Locals gather with hot cocoa, children giggle as they drop letters into Santa’s mailbox, and carolers fill the air with holiday classics. This free, family-friendly event is a cozy way to kick off the season.

Santa’s House on the Embarcadero

You won’t need to head to the North Pole to find Santa—he’ll be right in downtown Morro Bay! During the first two weekends of December 2025, Santa sets up shop at the Giant Chessboard on the Embarcadero. Families can stop by Fridays and Saturdays from 4 PM to 8 PM and Sundays from noon to 4 PM for festive photos, hot cocoa, and cookies. With the bay as his backdrop, it’s a picture-perfect setting for children (and kids at heart) to share their Christmas wishes.

The Lighted Boat Parade – December 6, 2025

One of Morro Bay’s most beloved traditions returns on Saturday, December 6. The Lighted Boat Parade sets sail at 6:30 PM and features dozens of fishing boats, sailboats, and yachts adorned with shimmering lights, inflatable snowmen, glowing trees, and holiday music. Locals line the harbor walk early to grab a spot near the South T-Pier or Morro Rock. The reflections of the boats dancing across the water create a stunning, almost surreal coastal Christmas scene. It’s festive, it’s family-friendly, and it’s absolutely unforgettable.

Want to really get into the spirit? Arrive early for free cookies and cocoa from the Morro Bay Rotary and enjoy live music from the Morro Bay White Caps Band starting at 5:30 PM.

Crab Pot Christmas Trees All Over Town

In Morro Bay, even the Christmas trees are nautical. Dozens of handmade “crab pot trees” appear throughout town, stacked in pyramids and wrapped in twinkle lights. You’ll spot them outside shops, on docks, in front yards, and even by the beach. Each one is unique and charming—a perfect mix of holiday tradition and seaside creativity. Take a self-guided walk or drive to discover them all. Some even come with QR codes or signs to explain their story. Don’t forget your camera—these quirky trees make great photo ops!

Holiday Markets and Local Gifts

If you’re looking for one-of-a-kind holiday gifts, Morro Bay delivers. The Winter Faire & Juried Craft Show at the Morro Bay Art Center runs through much of December and features handmade items like pottery, paintings, candles, jewelry, and more. It’s a great way to support local artists and find meaningful presents that you can’t buy anywhere else.

Nearby towns like Cayucos and Cambria also host winter markets and light displays, making it easy to plan a festive day trip during your stay. Just a short drive north, the Cambria Christmas Market features an immersive walk-through light show, food stands, and artisan vendors.

Celebrate Christmas the Morro Bay Way

Christmas in Morro Bay is quieter than a big city celebration—but that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s the kind of place where strangers say “Merry Christmas,” where the lights feel a little brighter against the ocean fog, and where new traditions are easy to make. Whether you’re here for a romantic escape, a family trip, or a solo reset, you’ll find holiday magic waiting in every twinkle light and warm cup of cider.
